A Rattling Productive Hospitalist

Brad Flansbaum writes the storey of a real productive hospitalist.

The medico profiled has 3000 discharges.  Just counting Medicare patients.

Most hospitalists I know run a daily census of viii to fifteen patients.  If this swain is working at a real high score of 25 (and recall, that would imply no commercial or Medicaid patients) alongside an average length of rest of 5 days, that would imply 5 discharges per day.

At that rate, if you lot worked 365 days per year, you lot notwithstanding would non accomplish fifty-fifty 2000 discharges.  So the 3000 seat out doesn't add together up.

Brad tried his best to become an answer:

In preparing the post, I reached out to him yesteryear electronic mail too spoke to his practise administrator.  Regrettably, he did non desire to comment on the data.  I aspired to larn if he leveraged NP too PAs or other unique resources to help his group.

By the way, does CMS produce any analysis of this sort of outlier performance?

I'm reminded of the joke most the lawyer who arrives inward sky too is greeted alongside a spectacular welcoming party.  "What's up?" he asks. "Do you lot produce this for everybody?"

"No," he's told, "but it isn't oftentimes nosotros become individual who's lived to endure 150."

"But I died at historic menstruation 85," he says.

"Oh, in that place must endure roughly mistake," they replied.  "We calculated your historic menstruation yesteryear looking at your hourly billing records."
