Turning Turtle -- Is This How Doctors Are Socialized?

Here's some other brusk excerpt from a draft of a book--Turning Turtle--being written past times my friend together with colleague.  As I described below, Samuel Jay Keyser--Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus) at MIT--suffered from a debilitating autumn that left him severely injured together with experiencing the wellness assist arrangement inwards a means he could get got never imagined.  This instant takes house after his 2nd surgical physical care for for spinal cord injuries.

One twenty-four hours a solo physician came into the room, introduced himself, together with without much preamble told me that piece the performance was a success, I in all likelihood would never walk again.

“Fuck you,” I said to myself.

To him, I said, “I’m lamentable to withdraw heed that.”

“I know it isn’t what you lot desire to hear,” he said inwards a consoling way. “But it’s best to live on realistic inwards situations similar yours.”

I wonder why he felt the involve to live on “realistic.” Perhaps it was his means of defending himself from becoming also to a greater extent than or less a patient.

I learned afterwards that the nurse on duty had overheard the conversation together with had given him hell when he left the room. Much afterwards inwards my infirmary stay, he exchanged his severe behavior for i alongside an engaging smile. I wonder if the nurse’s dressing downwards had changed him. I wonder if that’s how doctors are socialized on the job.
